There are many places on Earth that evoke surprise and delight. We will talk about some of them in this article.
Tunnel of Love, Ukraine
In the west of Ukraine, near the town of Klevan, Rivne region, a three-kilometer railway tunnel was built in a dense thicket of trees. Rays of sunlight hardly break through the foliage, and because of this twilight and solitude, the tunnel has become a favorite place for couples to walk. It is believed that this is the ideal place to propose, as they say, hand and heart. You just need to watch out for the train to appear at the end of the tunnel.
McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica
I wonder what a person would feel walking on Mars? Most likely, none of us will have the chance to visit another planet, but similar sensations can be obtained in the Antarctic desert, the conditions in which are considered to be among the most extreme on earth. Views of McMurdo Valley superficially match images of the surface of Mars. The physical indicators of the Antarctic desert and the Red Planet are also quite similar. And both are very far from civilization.
Waitomo Caves, New Zealand
The walls of Glowworm, the most famous of the North Island’s Waitomo karst cave range, are littered with glowworms found only in New Zealand. Their special cold bright blue glow makes the vault look like a starry sky on a clear frosty night. On an excursion to Glowworm, tourists go on a boat, cruising through underground waters and clicking cameras to preserve in their memory an amazing sight that is found only in one place on the planet.
Uyuni Salt Flat, Bolivia
When there is nothing around for several kilometers except perfectly flat salt slabs, it may seem that you are somewhere not on Earth. During the rainy season, moisture polishes the surface of the salt marsh and it becomes like a huge mirror. In sunny weather, the rays are reflected from the shiny salt surface, and it is easy for a tourist to imagine himself in the middle of an endless sea, where complete calm reigns. There are many comparisons, but in fact the famous salt marsh on the Altiplano plateau is the dry salt lake of Uyuni in the Bolivian Andes, at an altitude of 3650 meters. Its reflectivity and enormous size are used to test and calibrate orbiting satellites.
Mendehall Ice Caves, Alaska, USA
Tourists seeking thrills have a unique opportunity to visit the inside of a glacier in one of the caves in the Mendehall Valley near Juneau, Alaska. The photographs taken in the cave look more like images created using computer graphics – the view inside is so unusual. The uniqueness of the chance to visit here also lies in the fact that due to climate change, the glacier is melting at tremendous speed and may disappear in the coming years.
Black Forest, Germany
The name “Black Forest” evokes dark images from the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. Indeed, the twilight, moss-covered boulders, dilapidated ancient stone stairs and waterfalls in the thickets create the ideal backdrop for the scene where Hansel and Gretel meet the evil witch. But if you put mysticism aside, the Black Forest is one of the most beautiful natural reserves in Europe.
Giant’s Causeway, Ireland and Scotland
The Giant’s Causeway, consisting of basalt pillars connected to each other, is one of the most popular attractions in Ireland and Scotland. For centuries, local residents considered the mysterious columns to be the remains of a huge bridge that the ancient giants built between the two countries. But scientists explain the real reason for the emergence of this amazing natural object – the Giant’s Causeway appeared as a result of the rapid cooling and compression of volcanic lava; version may not be as romantic, but no less interesting.
Valley of the Ten Peaks, Canada
This valley is located in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. Around glacial Lake Moraine, ten mountain peaks rise, which on a sunny day are reflected in the blue surface of the water. The snow-capped peaks look especially picturesque against the backdrop of green forests at the foot of the mountains. You can take very colorful photographs here.
Emerald Lake, New Zealand
If you come to New Zealand to admire the amazing nature and accumulate pleasant impressions, you must visit Emerald Lake. This is an extinct volcano crater filled with unusually colored water that is located in Tongariro, the North Island’s oldest and most famous nature park. Those who manage to get to this remote place note the surprisingly calm and peaceful atmosphere that reigns around.
Alabaster Coast, Upper Normandy, France
The snow-white chalk cliffs in Haute-Normandie near the town of Étretat are one of the most photographed places in northern France. Particularly popular are the three natural arches extending into the sea and the white pebble beach, where famous French artists worked with their easels in the century before last, and modern tourists can simply relax while admiring the harsh landscapes.
Star Beach, Maldives
During the day, the beach on Vaadhoo Island looks like any other on earth, but as soon as the sun sets below the horizon, this place transforms. The waves rolling onto the sand put on an amazing show: luminous phytoplankton flickers in the water like hundreds of bright stars sparkling in the night sky.
Dead Valley, Namibia
Views of this arid area with the twisted skeletons of trees can inspire any artist, and even photographs from the “Dead Valley”, located on a clay plateau in the center of the Namib Desert, are more like surreal paintings. Perhaps the merciless heat overnight killed all life in this once flourishing place? No one knows the answer – the “Dead Valley” is considered one of the most ancient deserts on earth.
Panjin Red Beach, Liaoh River, China
One of the many attractions of the Celestial Empire is the beach on the Liaoh River in Liaoning Province. Every year thousands of tourists come here to see its extraordinary blood-red shores. What Makes Them Turn Red? Some scientists believe it’s because of a rare aquatic plant that appears in April or May, grows green in the summer, and turns bloody in color by fall. Thanks to this unique phenomenon, it seems that this beach is a set for a science-fiction film.
