1. “Walk”

What inspires you to do: drop everything and rush to St. Petersburg

10 films that inspire travel

Two best friends – played by Evgeny Tsyganov and Pavel Borshak – are walking around St. Petersburg in the company of a pretty, cheerful girl (Irina Pegova),

whom we met a few hours ago. This walk is filled with laughter, tears, flirting and, of course, beautiful city views. No one had photographed Petersburg like this before “The Walk” – not a majestic monument, but a beautiful, bustling city in which young Russian Europeans live easily and with some strain.

The script was written by Avdotya Smirnova, director – Alexey Uchitel. Tsyganov and Pegova are still very young and charming, and at the end Evgeny Grishkovets appears.

2. “Eat, Pray, Love”

What will inspire you: to start a new life in one of your favorite countries

10 films that inspire travel

Liz realizes that she is not living the life she wanted. She divorces her husband, temporarily leaves her job and goes on a real trip to all the countries she has dreamed of for so many years. First she goes to Italy to learn the language, communicate with charming locals and, of course, eat. A few months later he leaves for a remote Indian ashram to pray (and at the same time lose weight). And the trip ends in Indonesia, where Liz meets the man of her dreams.

The autobiographical book “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert several years ago became a real bestseller, which was read by almost all women on the planet. In the film, Liz is played by the smiling Julia Roberts, and her love is the inimitable Javier Bardem.

3. “Midnight in Paris”

What will inspire you: to go to Paris, to walk the streets at night waiting for Marion Cotillard

10 films that inspire travel

A budding American writer comes to Paris with his fiancée. He dreams of the beginning of the last century, when Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Dali, Buñuel and other classics lived in this beautiful city. At night he runs away from his capricious future wife and unexpectedly discovers a hole in time: on one of the streets the writer meets an old car that takes him back to those very beautiful 1920s.

Woody Allen made another masterpiece: a wonderful romantic comedy with Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams and Marion Cotillard, after watching which you can’t help but want to go to Paris.

4. “Everest”

What it will inspire you to do: go to the mountains (having first found a reliable guide)

10 films that inspire travel

A complex story, moreover, based on the real tragedy of May 1996, when several people did not return from an expedition to Everest. Back then, tourist expeditions to the great mountain were just gaining momentum. Experienced instructor Rob Hall leads a group of climbers: almost all of them have already conquered several peaks, and everyone is ready for the hike physically and mentally. But nature has its own plans.  And yet, after beautiful landscape photography, I really want to get to the mountains – even if I don’t immediately aim for Everest.

Baltasar Kormákur’s wonderful film, new in 2015, stars several major stars: Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Jake Gyllenhall, Keira Knightley and others.

5. “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”

What will inspire you: at a minimum, re-read Tolkien, or, at maximum, go to New Zealand and look at the filming locations

10 films that inspire travel

Hobbits are a peaceful and not adventurous people, invented by the great John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. However, when the wizard Gandalf the Gray and then thirteen dwarves appear on the doorstep of one hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, he has no choice but to embark on an amazing and dangerous journey with them. They will travel through lands inhabited by goblins and orcs to reclaim the mountain that once belonged to the dwarves from a huge dragon.

Peter Jackson, who gave us the stunning film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, continues his beautiful love affair with Tolkien’s books. Almost all the landscapes in the film are slightly improved from the director’s homeland, New Zealand.

6. “The Incredible Life of Walter Mitty”

What will inspire you: quit your job and buy a ticket to Iceland

10 films that inspire travel

Walter Mitty was a small man all his life: he worked in the photo lab of Life magazine, did not stand out, did not act as a hero, and was not known for any crazy things. This did not stop Walter from imagining himself as a superhero, and then one day he had the chance to show what he was capable of. The negative of an important photograph, which they want to put on the cover of the final issue, disappears from the darkroom, and Mitty sets off on an absolutely fantastic journey, which will include helicopters, steamships and even a skateboard ride through the valleys of Iceland.

This is Ben Stiller’s fifth directorial work with himself in the leading role – and, frankly, after this film it is impossible to perceive him only as an actor in simple American comedies.

7. “Brooklyn”

What it will inspire you to do: change your life by moving to the USA. Or to Ireland. Or don’t change anything, but just go there for a couple of days.

10 films that inspire travel

At the beginning of the 20th century, young Irishwoman Eilis sails to America with one suitcase to start a new life in Brooklyn. She leaves her mother and older sister at home. Ahead lies a frightening big city, work in a large store, evening school and a meeting with the charming Italian Tony. But tragic news forces Eilis to return to her homeland, where she meets another, no less charming and more promising young man. As a result, the girl will have to make a difficult choice.

For her leading role in “Brooklyn,” Saoirse Ronan was nominated for an Oscar in 2016, although she did not receive a statuette. But this doesn’t harm the film in any way – if after watching you don’t want to walk around New York or find yourself on a deserted beach in Ireland, then we don’t even know what else to offer you.

8. “Into the Wild”

What will inspire you: to arrange a big road trip around the USA and Mexico

10 films that inspire travel

This is the true story of a young man named Christopher McCandles. He had everything one could want: a wealthy family, a lot of money, a car, a good education. But one fine day he decides to give up this stupid material world, donates all his savings to a charity fund and goes on a trip. He even gives up his name, becoming Alexander Supertramp. Alexander traveled around the USA and Mexico and eventually ended up in Alaska, where he lived in an old bus in the middle of a harsh desert area.

The film is based on the book by Jon Krakauer (the same John from Everest),

and Sean Penn acted as director. Starring Emile Hirsch.

9. “Under the Tuscan Sun”

What will inspire you: go to sunny Italy in search of love

10 films that inspire travel

A somewhat shortened version of “Eat, Pray, Love” for those who don’t like Julia Roberts and prefer Italy to India and Indonesia. Writer Frances Mays divorces her husband and goes to Italy to unwind. Tuscany makes such an impression on her that Frances buys a dilapidated mansion, meets the neighbors and, naturally, meets true love.

This just sounds cloying, but in fact the film is considered almost a classic, and is invariably recommended to everyone who needs a little Italy in their life.

10. “Grand Budapest Hotel”

What will inspire you: get to Hungary and stay in the most respectable hotel

10 films that inspire travel

The exciting adventures of the eccentric concierge Gustav and his young friend, the porter Mustafa. A regular guest of the Grand Budapest Hotel, millionaire Madame D., bequeaths to Gustav a valuable painting, “Boy with an Apple.” But after her death, her son Dmitry appears, who does not agree with the will and accuses Gustav of murder. Then events spiral at a stunning speed – perhaps only the number of stars per meter of film is more stunning. Ralph Fiennes, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Owen Wilson, Saoirse Ronan, Willem Dafoe, Bill Murray – I could go on for a very long time.

You are unlikely to be able to get to the places where this amazing story takes place: the country of Zubrowka and the city of Lutz were invented by screenwriter and director Wes Anderson. It is a collection of everything that the average resident thinks about a certain country in Eastern Europe. Why not take Hungary for her?
