Take a steam bath and relax

Not the most obvious leisure option in the cultural capital – and yet St. Petersburg has excellent baths. So why not spend an evening or two at the spa?

For example, you can visit one of the oldest bathhouse complexes in Russia, Lantern Baths, which opened after a large-scale reconstruction just two years ago. And it first started operating in 1871 and was then called the Voronin Baths. Today, the interior has been restored, including the ancient stoves and fireplace. In addition to the classic steam rooms, there is a sauna, hammam, swimming pools and plunge pools. Two hours will cost 2,500 rubles, you can separately order a steam bath, wrap or massage.

Another option is “Tar Baths”, located near Nevsky Prospekt. This complex has been operating since the middle of the last century and over the years has become one of the best in the city. There is a sauna, hammam, a large refreshing pool and a cool plunge pool. A two-hour session will cost 2,000 rubles; you can purchase a certificate for one of the programs, which will also include steam from professional bath attendants and various procedures, for example, foam-soap washing or scrubbing.

A little further from the city center, next to the Begovaya metro station, there are more budget-friendly, but no less beautiful “Primorskie Bani”. This is a modern bath complex with panoramic views from the saunas and showers. For 2,000 rubles on weekdays or 3,000 on weekends, unlimited visits are available here – you can spend the whole day in the bathhouse, sauna and pool.

Exploring unusual architecture

St. Petersburg is a very beautiful city; you can admire the buildings of different periods here endlessly. Houses with well-like courtyards, unusual turrets and arches, buildings richly decorated with stucco – you can easily find all this without us. The main thing is to look around, otherwise it’s very easy to pass by the unique iron house, located at the intersection of Sadovaya Street and the Fontanka River embankment. By the way, this building also has a courtyard-well.

You can look at a wonderful example of constructivism at the intersection of Grafsky Lane and Rubinstein Street. The six-story gray building was built in 1927 for engineers and writers who were supposed to live here as a commune. None of the 52 apartments had a kitchen, because residents had to eat in a two-hundred-seat dining room. The bathrooms were shared, one per floor. Today this house is called the “Tear of Socialism”, and here, of course, they did a redevelopment – the communist paradise and common life somehow did not take root. But the outside of the building remained unchanged.

There is also a house in St. Petersburg that is somewhat reminiscent of Gaudi’s buildings in Barcelona. You can find it at 9 Perekupnaya Lane. Its architect was Fyodor Lumberg, and although there are no special decorations on the facade, memorable soft shapes, asymmetry and rounded elements make the building the most memorable in the quarter.

Holidays with children

To prevent children from getting bored of traditional museums and canal walks, we suggest adding entertainment to your plan created exclusively for them. For example, go to New Holland Island: here is one of the coolest playgrounds in the city with the frame of an almost real ship. The model is made on a scale of 80% of the original, and you can climb all levels, sit on cannons, hang on ropes and stand on the captain’s bridge. There are also simpler areas, with sandboxes and slides. And for adults, interesting lectures and concerts are regularly organized on the island. In winter there is an ice skating rink.

With active children, you can go to Energy of Heights – the largest indoor rope park not only in St. Petersburg, but also in Russia. Here you can go through 12 tracks (5 levels available), completing more than a hundred different tasks. And the bravest ones can climb to a height of 17 meters, right up to the ceiling. There are ziplines, trampolines, and a climbing wall, and children under 4 years old, who are too early to climb the slopes, will enjoy a special children’s corner with toys. A ticket to the park for one person for two hours costs from 1,280 rubles.

But if, on the contrary, you want to sit in one place and look at something very beautiful, come to Planetarium No. 1 on the Obvodny Canal embankment. Here you can attend amazing performances. Each session lasts an hour and includes several films. An adult ticket costs 590 rubles, a child’s ticket costs 450. They also host cool concerts, for example, on February 9 there will be a space show with an organ playing soundtracks to Star Wars.

Admiring nature

In the suburbs of St. Petersburg there are enough wonderful places to relax and unite with nature. For example, go for a walk through the Lindulovskaya Grove – this is a unique space where some species of plants and animals are preserved today. The first trees were planted here by order of Peter I, and since 1990 the grove has been protected by UNESCO. Larch, spruce, fir, pine, oak and elm trees grow here. You can get there in an hour by train from Finlyandsky Station, get off at Roshchino station and walk about one and a half kilometers. The entrance to the grove is marked by a large gate.

If the weather is favorable for walks along the sea, go to Lipovo: the local wild beach next to the pine forest is very popular with nature lovers. You can come for a picnic, but try not to miss the sunset, they are beautiful here. And next door is the pretty town of Sosnovy Bor, where you can stop by for dinner and sightseeing – for example, the Nuclear Power Plant Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art are located there.

However, beautiful views and silence can be found within the city limits, for example, in Primorsky Victory Park on Krestovsky Island. Walk along the oak alleys around the ponds and feed tame swans and squirrels. The park is not too big and not crowded, but it is considered one of the best places to relax in the city.

Sign up for extreme sports

Winter is the time for active winter entertainment, especially since there are plenty of them in the vicinity of St. Petersburg. For example, just an hour’s drive from the city is the Pukhtolova Gora park, where you can go skiing and snowboarding (four slopes are open for them), as well as cheesecake and ice skating (entrance to the skating rink is free). An adult subscription for 10 lifts on weekdays costs 750 rubles, on weekends – 1,500 rubles. If you wish, you can stay here overnight in one of the cozy houses.

For more difficult trails, go to Igora: there are 10 trails with a total length of 4,200 meters, two training slopes, illuminated trails for cross-country skiing and a slope for cheesecake skiing. And also a zip line, a spa complex and an entertainment center – in general, it’s worth coming for a couple of days.

If you are not ready to leave St. Petersburg yet, you can actively spend time within its borders. Many city parks have cheesecake slides – go for them to the Apple Orchard, Udelny Park, Tavrichesky Garden or the Suzdal Lakes. You can also go ice skating in Udelny Park – there is a large outdoor skating rink with rental facilities and a locker room; a ticket for a session lasting two and a half hours costs 400 rubles. Look for a free skating rink at the Central Park of Culture and Culture named after. S. M. Kirov on Big Square (skates can be rented for 300 rubles).
