1. La Farola de Malaga (Malaga). Coordinates: 36.71416°N 4.41453°W
Our route runs along the picturesque coastal road N-340. His first point will be the lighthouse in the port of Malaga. It began work in 1817, at the end of the century it was badly damaged during an earthquake, but was restored and continues to function to the present day, and in a fully automatic mode. The total height of the lighthouse is 33 meters. This is the oldest active lighthouse on your route.
The port itself is very beautiful and neat, with numerous moored yachts. And the embankment with a variety of restaurants (be sure to try the seafood here) and shops is great for an evening stroll.
2. Faro de Torre del Mar. Coordinates: 36.73498°N 4.09619°W
The second lighthouse is a 30-minute drive from Malaga and is located within the city limits of Torre del Mar (this is a small town known primarily for its beaches). The lighthouse began to function in 1826. It is interesting that it became striped recently; before the tower was completely white.
There is a bicycle rental point near the lighthouse, so you can take a bicycle and ride along the beautiful embankment (its length is more than two kilometers). Also in the area of the lighthouse there are various sports grounds (there is even one for playing petanque).
3. Faro de Torrox (Torrox). Coordinates: 36.72655°N 3.95735°W
The next lighthouse is waiting for you in the town of Torrox. This is a small and very quiet town, the main attraction of which is the lighthouse we need and a long embankment with a large number of restaurants and bars.
4. Faro de Punta de la Mona. Coordinates: 36.72364°N 3.73207°W
The lighthouse is located on a hill and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. Despite the fact that you cannot climb the lighthouse itself, it is possible to climb the hill. And at its foot there is an almost deserted pebble beach and a pier.
5. Faro de Cabo Sacratif. Coordinates: 36.69444°N 3.46830°W
The next lighthouse is located 30 km to the east. This is “Cabo Sacratif”, rising above the sea on a high hill. The lighthouse was built in 1863. The hill offers beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea and the coastal strip.
6. Faro de Adra (Adra). Coordinates: 36.74796°N 3.03098°W
Adra — small town in the province of Almeria. The current lighthouse was built in 1986 (this is the third city lighthouse, the first was destroyed by flooding, and the second was not tall enough to stand out from the city lights),
it is located on the cape in the western part of the city.
7. Faro de Punta de Banos. Coordinates: 36.69580°N 2.84745°W
This is the most modern and unusual lighthouse on your way. It was opened in 1991 to improve safety in an area notorious for numerous shipwrecks. “Punta de Banos” is located on the beach and, interestingly, surrounded by greenhouses that also glow at night.
Not far from the lighthouse, on the cape, is the Castillo de Guardias Viejas,
built in the 18th century, and subsequently partially destroyed during the Spanish War of Independence. The castle was completely restored in 1980 and now houses a museum, with an extensive collection of clothing and weapons from the Napoleonic era. During the summer, musical concerts are periodically held here. What’s nice is that entry is absolutely free. Address: Calle del Muro.
8. Faro de Punta Sabinal. Coordinates: 36.68685°N 2.70129°W
Next lighthouse — the Sabinal lighthouse, which was built in 1926 after the flooding and destruction of its predecessor. Interestingly, this is one of the few Spanish lighthouses where a woman worked as a keeper for a long time.
Currently the lighthouse is located on the territory of the Punta Entinas-Sabinar nature reserve,
located in the municipality of El Ejido. The reserve is a 15 km long coastal strip, where sand dunes, freshwater and salt lakes alternate. Even in the high summer season, the beaches here are often empty, which is why this place is ideal, for example, for bird watching. In summer you can see flamingos, waders and rare species of gulls here, and in autumn and winter gray herons and great cormorants stop here.
9. Faro de Roquetas de Mar. Coordinates: 36.75332°N 2.60625°W
Roquetas de Mar — small resort town with stunning beaches. There was also a lighthouse on the embankment, which was named after the city and was opened in 1863
Not far from the city is the Mini Hollywood theme park, a Spanish piece of the Wild West reminiscent of a cowboy town (address: Carretera nacional 340 a, Km. 464, Tabernas). Opening hours vary depending on the season. Detailed information about the park can be found on the website.
10. Faro de San Telmo (Almeria). Coordinates: 36.82845°N 2.49231°W.
On the way from the previous lighthouse towards Almeria, you will definitely pass the world’s largest cluster of greenhouses, which are also impressive because they glow brightly at night. Behind the greenhouses another lighthouse awaits you. This is San Telmo, which was built in 1976 on the tower of an 18th-century castle located on a cliff. There is a walking trail leading to the lighthouse, along which you can climb for breathtaking views.
11. Faro Almeria (Almeria). Coordinates: 36.49333°N 2.27520°W
Almeria Lighthouse (Faro Almeria) is located in the port of Almeria. The lighthouse began operating in 1925. The structure has a hexagonal tower shape and, according to many local residents, is one of the most beautiful lighthouses in Andalusia. A great place to end your lighthouse tour with a beautiful photo!
After you have seen all 11 lighthouses, you can stop overnight in Almeria, return to Malaga (2.5 hours journey),
get to Grenada (about 2 hours) or Cartagena (2 hours and 13.9 euros for the AP-7 toll highway).
