The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced the shortlist of nominees for its RIBA International Prize, thereby creating a unique guide for connoisseurs of modern architecture.
30 objects from 20 countries, built over the past three years, participated in the competition. Experts led by Richard Rogers, creator of the Millennium Dome in the UK and the Pompidou Center in France, visited each of these structures, assessing the skill of the architect, as well as the benefits that architectural objects bring to society. 6 buildings made it to the finals. Among them are iconic buildings of such masters as Zaha Hadid and David Chipperfield, and miniature objects on the Åland Islands and the Arctic Circle. The winner will be announced on November 24th.
The Arquipelago Center for Contemporary Art in the Azores Islands in Portugal is recognized as a standard of architectural minimalism. It was opened in the city of Ribeira Grande with a population of 25 thousand people. The jury noted the careful attitude to the historical heritage and the great variability of the interiors: the museum complex combined the building of a former tobacco factory, whose facades became basalt after reconstruction, and a new snow-white building of an abstract shape.
Author of the project Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan Zaha Hadid considered this construction one of the best works of her bureau. The alien, unlike anything else architecture of the building is truly breathtaking.
In Jumex MuseumCommissioned by Jumex, Mexico City houses the world’s largest private collection of contemporary Latin American art. The jury noted the work with light, as well as the quality of materials and details – the building is decorated with limestone and wood.
The Stormen complex in the Norwegian city of Bodø became the first major international project for the London-based architectural bureau DRDH. Built 100 km from the Arctic Circle, Stormen united three concert halls, a library and a community center under its roof.
The authors of the memorial Ring of Memory, erected in Ablain-Saint-Nazaire, France in memory of those killed in the First World War, chose the shape of the ring as a symbol at the same time eternity and brotherhood. The names of 579,606 soldiers are immortalized here – all who fought on the Western Front; in alphabetical order, regardless of citizenship, military rank and religion.
