Adventures of a Kudablin participant in Cologne

In the “Cudablin” project, we send completely different people on trips at our expense! Anastasia Lesina went to Cologne: she learned about the most interesting museums in the city, compiled a playlist for lunch in the park, and showed us a route for an interesting introduction to the city. More details in her report!

“Das ist fantastisch” are three words that I can use to describe my adventure in Cologne. Despite the fact that I had a fever, I persevered through these unforgettable 2 days!

I have not used public transport once during these two days (except for the train from the airport to the city and back), walked more than 26 km, practiced my German (and a little English) and climbed 533 steps to one of the tallest cathedrals in the world (Cologne Cathedral ranks 3rd in the list of the tallest churches in the world).

We arrived in Cologne around 14:00 local time (the difference with Moscow is 1 hour). To get to the center of Cologne from the airport, you need to go down to the lowest floor, buy a ticket from the machine to the Köln Hbf station, validate it and go down to the trains. Ticket price: 2.90€. Travel time is only 15 minutes.

As you exit the station you will immediately see the Cologne Cathedral. Be sure to go inside, it is very beautiful there. It’s free. Go to the right of the main entrance, go down and go to the observation deck.

Near the Cologne Cathedral there are two museums: the Ludwig Museum (allow about 3 hours for the visit) – entrance ticket 12 €, audio guide 3 €, and the Roman-German Museum – 6.5 €.

After taking a bird’s eye view of the city, relax for a while in the Rhine Park. Here, sitting on the grass, it’s great to eat ice cream and fruit. Listen to music. My German selection:

  • Reamonn “Supergirl”;
  • Die Prinzen “Hier sind wir”;
  • Lea “Zu dir”;
  • Namika “Je Ne Parle Pas Français (Beatgees Remix)”;
  • Vanessa Mai Feat. Olexesh “Wir 2 Immer 1”.

You can have lunch here right away. There are many cafes along the Rhine. Be sure to try the pork leg with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.

Then head further along the Rhine. On your right will be the Fish Market, Great Church of St. Martin, Church of the Virgin Mary.

You have come to the chocolate museum (it will be on your left). Entrance ticket 11.5€. There is also a store at the museum where you will find a bunch of interesting things made from chocolate (hammer, doll, books, etc.). Go back along the Rhine and go up to the left. Walk to the Town Hall and stroll around the grounds. This is one of the walking options that you can take advantage of.
