Aksai is a small town about 30 km from Rostov-on-Don. We leave the city along Sholokhov Avenue, which turns into Aksaisky near our destination, and then turn towards Aksai. The journey will take no more than 30 minutes. In the city we find Grushevskaya Street, where a fortress with a customs outpost of the 18th century is located. Let’s walk through a network of basements with casemates and cells for seized property. And then we’ll sit in the gazebo on the shore of the pond and take pictures in the weeping willows. The customs house is the only remaining part of the fortress of St. Demetrius of Rostov, the most powerful of the southern fortifications, from which the name of the city of Rostov-on-Don came.
Inspection time: 40 minutes. Entrance: 150 rubles*.
On the next street let’s look at Aksai Military History Museum — there is a army equipment. But the main attention is immediately drawn to a unique underground bunker to protect the Soviet commander’s headquarters from nuclear attacks. You can only walk through the giant abandoned labyrinths made of concrete and metal with a guide. Therefore, it is beneficial to take a comprehensive ticket for all exhibitions.
Time for inspection: one and a half hours. Entrance with excursion: 270 rubles*.
From Aksay we reach Starocherkasskaya in 25 minutes. The center of the historical capital of the Don Cossacks has the status of a historical and architectural museum-reserve. See the palace of the Efremov atamans, the Military Resurrection Cathedral, the fortress house of Kondraty Bulavin, several more colorful buildings and a modern recreation park. Local restaurants serve Don specialties: fish, cheese, liqueurs and teas.
Time with inspection of the palace exhibition: two and a half hours. Entrance to the palace: 260 rubles*.
City Novocherkassk 36 km from the old capital, founded by Ataman Platov and proclaimed the world capital of the Cossacks. The historical center is rich in ancient Cossack mansions. It is worth visiting the grandiose Ascension Cathedral with its solemn blue and gold interiors.
The return to Rostov-on-Don will take an hour and a half. We’ll end the evening with a walk to the legendary restroom on Gazetny Lane. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a cafe here, where the futurist poet Velimir Khlebnikov read poetry. Then the room changed its status several times, becoming a public catering facility for a while, but this did not in any way affect the exhibitions that regularly take place here. And in the neighboring yard, nicknamed “Draft”, rappers gathered and the group “Casta” was formed. You will be able to dine spectacularly in the interior restaurant “Society of the Well-Fed”.
Day two: journey towards Taganrog
