The Main Museum of St. Petersburg, on a specially created page, launched a public opinion poll regarding the name of the new museum complex in the Eastern wing of the General Staff Building.
The Hermitage, founded by Catherine II in the 18th century, was constantly expanding – its collections grew, and the number of buildings in which they were housed increased. By the end of the 20th century, the museum included: the Winter Palace, the Small Hermitage, the Old Hermitage, the New Hermitage, and the Hermitage Theater. In 2015, the State Hermitage opened a new museum complex in the East Wing of the General Staff Building. Permanent exhibitions of art from the 19th and 20th centuries moved here from the Winter Palace, along with historical interiors and temporary exhibitions. The very name of the building “General Staff” is used rather by inertia – this majestic structure was built according to the design of the architect Carl Rossi for the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, now the purpose of the building has changed, but the name, which also has a military connotation, remains. Therefore, museum workers turned to the public with a request to help choose the most successful option for a new name from those proposed or come up with your own. Successful not only from the point of view of the history of the building and its modern life, but also how well the name will be translated into English. The survey will run until August 1st.
