One of the largest museums in the world – the State Hermitage – celebrates its 252nd anniversary today. In honor of the holiday, the museum extended its work for 22 hours, and made admission free for all visitors.

In addition, the celebration will take place on Palace Square. Every 10 minutes, a multimedia 3D performance “Hermitage Day” will be broadcast on the façade of the Winter Palace. The Mystery of Light”, thanks to which viewers will take a virtual walk through the halls of the Hermitage to the music of Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitry Shostakovich, Alfred Schnittke, Maurice Ravel and Aram Khachaturian. The broadcast of the performance will last from 18.00 to 22.00. Admission is free.
For the first time, a 3D show dedicated to the Hermitage was shown on the occasion of the celebration of the museum’s 250th anniversary in December 2014: then the “History Ball” took place on the square – the facade of the General Staff building turned into a screen for a three-dimensional performance about the most significant episodes of Russian history, of which the Hermitage was a witness and participant.
The museum annually celebrates its founding day on December 7 – St. Catherine’s Day. The founding date of the Hermitage is considered to be 1764, when Catherine II acquired a collection of paintings from the Berlin merchant Gotzkowsky.
