Cable cars are a great way not only to get from one point to another, but also to get a vivid impression. We’ve compiled a list of the most impressive cable cars from Europe to New Zealand and the USA.
Cable car Grindelwald-Männlichen, Switzerland

A cable car in the Swiss Alps connects the village of Grindelwald and Mount Männlichen. Its length is 6700 meters and the trip takes 30 minutes. All this time you can enjoy the view of the valleys, quaint ancient villages and mountain peaks – green or snowy depending on the time of year. A return ticket for adults and children over 15 years old costs 49 euros, and for children under 16 years old it costs 25 euros.
Cable car to Mount Pan de Azucar, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Mount Pan de Azucar or Sugarloaf is one of the main attractions of the Brazilian capital. You can get to the top by funicular, opened in 1912. The cabin offers views of the metropolis, the sands of Copacabana Beach, Guanabara Bay and the statue of Christ the Redeemer on Mount Corcovado. Along the way, you can stop at the Morro da Urca hill and have lunch, and then continue climbing. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $13 for children over five years of age. For children under five years of age the trip will be free.
Cable car on Roosevelt Island, New York, USA

From the window of the cable car that connects Roosevelt Island to Manhattan, you can see the Queensboro Bridge, the East River and the Upper East Side. The trailer seats 125 people and travels the entire route in less than five minutes. You can pay for the cable car ride with a New York City Subway card – the cost will be the same as a subway ride and will be $2.75.

One of the most impressive cable cars in the Southern Hemisphere leads to Bob Peak, which offers views of Queenstown and the blue Lake Wakatipu, as well as Mount Coronet Peak and Cecil Peak. At the top you can have lunch in a cafe, rent a bicycle, listen to traditional Maori music, and in the evening look at the stars in a specially designated section where the light does not reach. The trip costs $25 for adults and $16 for children.
Cable car to Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa

Table Mountain offers panoramic views of Cape Town, Signal Hill and Lions Head, beaches and Robben Island in the distance. The highest point to which the funicular rises is at an altitude of 1,057 meters – the journey there takes only five minutes. At the top you can have lunch in a restaurant, buy souvenirs and stroll through the national park. Round-trip tickets cost $25 for adults and $12 for children. There is no need to pay for children under four years old.

Mount Huashan is famous for its waterfalls, geysers and unique rocks. This is one of the most dangerous mountains to climb in China. To get to its highest peak, you need to overcome more than two kilometers along an almost vertical slope. But if you want to save time and effort for a walk to the top, you can use the cable car – more precisely, one of three leading to different peaks. The ticket price will be from 80 to 100 yuan. For children under 120 centimeters tall the trip is free.
Aiguille du Midi cable car, Chamonix, France

The funicular leading to the top of the Aiguille du Midi mountain is one of the highest in the world – its top station is at an altitude of 3,777 meters above sea level. During the 20-minute trip, you can enjoy panoramic views of the French, Swiss and Italian Alps. At the top there is an observation deck, cafes and souvenir shops. A ticket for adults and children over 15 years of age inclusive costs from 49 to 60 euros depending on the season, and for children under 15 years of age and senior citizens – from 42 to 51 euros.
Cable car on the island of Langkawi, Malaysia

The cable car is the only way to get to the pedestrian Sky Bridge with its 360-degree panorama of the Andaman Sea and Langkawi Island. The views from the cable car cabin are also worth seeing – during the trip you will see forest waterfalls and tropical forests. The 2.2 kilometer journey takes 20 minutes and costs $14 for adults and $10 for children.
