South America has many places with incredibly beautiful landscapes. It is therefore not surprising that this continent has attracted millions of travelers over the years. There are magnificent beaches, picturesque mountains, unusual traditions, and delicious cuisine… We have collected 6 destinations that are worth going to South America for.
1. Inca Trail, Peru
Starting in Cusco, this four-day trek will immerse you in the Incan past. There is only one trail you can follow here, and it leads to Machu Picuchu, South America’s most famous ruins.
2. Carretera Austral, Chile
If you want to see the greenest and wildest part of Chile, head to Northern Patagonia, where the Carretera Austral or “Road of the South” is located, stretching 1,240 kilometers – from Puerto Montt to tiny Villa O’Higgins.
Icy lakes, huge glaciers and fjords – you will see all this from the windows of your car. But it is much easier to get to Carretera Austral by public transport. All you need is time and good organizational skills, as not all buses run daily.
3. Death Road, Bolivia
Death Road is one of the most popular attractions in Bolivia, for which many travelers actually cross the border. This adventure is a four-kilometer descent along the old road from La Paz to Coroico in Yungas.
Be careful if you decide to take this trip. The road is indeed dangerous, so we advise you to carefully choose your carrier.
4. Ruta 40, Argentina
The legendary Ruta 40 (or RN40) runs from the top of Argentina (from the border with Bolivia) to the bottom and follows the line of the Andes. The road is 5,000 km long and goes around 11 regions, crosses 18 rivers (236 bridges) and connects about 13 lakes, 20 national parks and hundreds of communities. Not surprisingly, this is one of the most popular tourist routes in the country.
If you do not have your own car, then go only to the section from El Calafate/El Chaltén to Bariloche. It is particularly popular with backpackers and is one of the most developed areas of the route. But nevertheless, you can get a feel for the place here, making your way through endless bushes and thickets, which are only occasionally interrupted by small settlements.
5. Sera Verde Railway, Brazil
The Sera Verde Express travels along one of Brazil’s most scenic train routes. You will pass through many tunnels and see green slopes, mountains and one of the largest forests in the country – the Atlantic Forest.
Another advantage of this train is that many travelers do not know about this route and only go to the southern regions of the country.
Sit on the left side of the train – there will be more panoramic views from there.
6. Torres del Paine, Chile
The huge Torres del Paine massif, as well as the national park, the granite towers of Las Torres in the east and Los Cuernos in the west are one of the most beautiful places in Patagonia. The park offers amazing opportunities for hiking, trekking and animal watching. If you’re lucky, you’ll see guanacos, wild relatives of llamas, and rheas, a small ostrich.
To get a feel for the place, it’s best to take the Circuit route, which usually takes 7 to 10 days. This is an extended version of the most popular route “W”. He’ll take you around the back of Torres and get you out of the crowds.
